Florida Holidays: What you need to know

Florida observes the following as official holidays:

January 15 Birthday of Martin Luther King Jr.
January 19 Birthday of Robert E. Lee
February 12 Lincoln's Birthday
February 15 Susan B. Anthony's Birthday
Third Monday in February Washington's Birthday
Friday before Easter Good Friday
April 2 Pascua Florida Day
April 26 Confederate Memorial Day
Last Monday in May Memorial Day
June 3 Birthday of Jefferson Davis
June 14 Flag Day
July 4 Independence Day
First Monday in September Labor Day
Second Monday in October Columbus Day and Farmers' Day
First Tuesday after First Monday in November Election Day
November 11 Veterans Day
Fourth Thursday in November Thanksgiving
December 25 Christmas
If any of these holidays falls on a Sunday, it is observed on the following Monday (FL Stat. Ann. Sec. 683.01). Shrove Tuesday, also known as “Mardi Gras,” is also observed in counties where carnival associations are organized for that purpose.
State employers. Florida public offices are closed on: New Year's Day; Birthday of Martin Luther King Jr.;Memorial Day; Independence Day; Labor Day; Veterans Day; Thanksgiving Day; Friday after Thanksgiving; and Christmas Day. Public employees are entitled to these days as paid days off. Holidays that fall on Sundays are observed on the following Monday. Holidays falling on Saturdays are observed on the previous Friday (FL Stat. Ann. Sec.110.117).
Private employers. Private employers are not obliged by state law to provide any holidays as paid (or unpaid). No Florida law requires that employers:
• Pay premium pay to employees who work on holidays
• Pay employees for unworked hours on holidays
• Count unworked hours on holidays as “hours worked” when computing overtime
However, many Florida employers do observe some or all of these practices.
