State employers. Hawaii state offices are closed and state employees are entitled to the holidays noted as paid days off. If a holiday falls on a Sunday, it is observed on the following Monday. If a holiday falls on a Saturday, it is observed on the previous Friday. State employees that regularly work on Saturday will observe the holiday on Saturday and not on Friday; those that work on Sunday will observe the holiday on Sunday but not on Monday (HI Rev. Stat. Sec. 8-2).
Private employers. Private employers are not required by state law to provide any holidays as paid (or unpaid) days off. However, most employers do observe at least 7 paid holidays.
