Louisiana Holidays: What you need to know

Louisiana observes the following as legal holidays:

January 8 Battle of New Orleans
Third Monday in January Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday
January 19 Robert E. Lee Day
Tuesday Before Ash Wednesday Mardi Gras
Third Monday in February Washington's Birthday
Friday before Easter Good Friday
Last Monday in May National Memorial Day
June 3 Confederate Memorial Day
July 4 Independence Day
August 30 Huey P. Long Day
First Monday in September Labor Day
Second Monday in October Columbus Day
November 1 All Saints' Day
November 11 Veterans Day
Fourth Thursday in November Thanksgiving Day
December 25 Christmas Day
Whenever Christmas, New Year's Day, or July 4 falls on a Sunday, it is observed on the following day. If any of these holidays falls on a Saturday, it is observed on the preceding Friday when permitted by ordinance. Various parishes may also observe other holidays, such as Mardi Gras, when permitted by ordinance.
Inauguration Day is a holiday in the city of Baton Rouge once every 4 years, and Memorial Day is annually proclaimed as a legal holiday. General Election Day is a state holiday the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November in even-numbered years.
To the extent practicable, public employees are entitled to the following holidays: New Years Day; Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday; Mardi Gras Day; Good Friday; Independence Day; Labor Day; Veteran's Day; Thanksgiving Day; Christmas; Inauguration Day once every 4 years in Baton Rouge or General Election Day every 2 years (LA Rev. Stat. Sec. 1:55 (B)). Additionally, the governor may authorize the observance of other holidays.
