Minnesota Holidays: What you need to know

Minnesota observes the following as legal holidays:

Third Monday in January Martin Luther King's Birthday
Third Monday in February Washington's and Lincoln's Birthday
Last Monday in May Memorial Day
July 4 Independence Day
First Monday in September Labor Day
Second Monday in October Columbus Day
November 11 Veterans Day
Fourth Thursday in November Thanksgiving Day
December 25 Christmas Day
If New Year's Day, Independence Day, Veterans Day, or Christmas Day falls on a Sunday, it is observed on the following Monday. When any of these holidays fall on a Saturday, it is observed on the preceding Friday (MN Stat. Sec. 645.44).
State employers. Minnesota public offices are closed on these holidays and public employees are entitled to them as paid days off. Columbus Day is not a paid holiday for the Executive Branch of the state government. The day after Thanksgiving Day is a holiday for the Executive Branch only, although the governor may decree it a paid holiday for other branches (MN Stat. Sec. 645.44(5)).
Any employee of the state, its political subdivisions, or a municipality who observes a religious holiday on days that do not fall on a Sunday or a legal holiday is entitled to such days off for observance. Such days off will be unpaid, except where the employee has accumulated annual leave, and in that case, such days must be charged against the accumulated annual leave of the employee or unless the employee is able to work an equivalent number of days at some other time during the fiscal year to compensate for the days lost (MN Stat Sec. 15A.22).
Private employers. Private employers are not obligated by state law to provide any holidays as paid (or unpaid) days off.
