Mississippi Holidays: What you need to know

Mississippi observes the following as official holidays:

January 1 New Year's Day
3rd Monday in January Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Birthday/Robert E. Lee's Birthday
3rd Monday in February Washington's Birthday
Last Monday in April Confederate Memorial Day
Last Monday in May National Memorial Day/Jefferson Davis' Birthday
July 4 Independence Day
1st Monday in September Labor Day
November 11 Armistice/Veterans Day
4th Thursday in November Thanksgiving Day
December 25 Christmas Day
In lieu of any one of the above holidays, except the holidays designated as Martin Luther King, Jr.'s/Robert E. Lee's, Washington's Birthday, or Armistice/Veterans Day, any municipality or county may declare Mardi Gras Day, or any one other day during the year, to be a legal holiday (MS Code Sec. 3-3-7).
If a holiday falls on a Sunday, it is observed on the following Monday (MS Code Sec. 25-1-97).
Mississippi state offices are closed and state employees are entitled to the days noted above as paid holidays.
If a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, it may be observed by state agencies the following Monday (MS Code Sec. 25-1-97).
County courthouses close on the preceding Friday to observe holidays that fall on a Saturday and the following Monday if a holiday falls on a Sunday (MS Code Sec. 25-1-99).
Private employers are not obligated by state law to provide any holidays as paid or unpaid time off. However, many Mississippi employers observe some of the following practices:
• Premium pay to employees who work on holidays
• Counting unworked hours on holidays as "hours worked" when computing overtime
• Paying employees for unworked hours on holidays
