Rhode Island Holidays: What you need to know

Rhode Island observes the following as official holidays:

1st Tuesday after 1st Monday in November (Biennially) Election Day

The governor, president, or state or federal legislatures may appoint additional holidays. If a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, state employees observe it on the following Monday (RI Gen. Laws Sec. 25-1-1 et seq.).
Generally, under Rhode Island law, employees who work on Sundays and holidays must be paid at least one and one-half times the normal rate of pay. Employees cannot be discharged or otherwise penalized for refusing to work on a Sunday or holiday. For purposes of this law, "holidays" include New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Victory Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.
Certain employers are exempt from these requirements by statute or regulation, including manufacturers that operate for 7 continuous days per week; chauffeur-driven limousine or taxicab companies that operate 7 days per week, 24 hours per day; and car rental companies at the state's airports that are required to operate on Sundays and holidays. Manufacturers that operate three shifts or begin the workweek on Sundays may begin the workweek at 11:00 p.m. on Sunday and are not required to pay employees at the overtime ...
