Maryland Life Insurance: What you need to know

Employers have no obligation under Maryland law to offer life insurance to their employees. However, if group life insurance is among the benefits offered to workers, certain minimum requirements must be satisfied (MD Ins. Code Sec. 17-101et seq.).

Group characteristics. The group to be insured must consist of no fewer than 10 people. Eligibility for membership must extend to all employees or all members of a particular class of employees.
Employer/employee contributions. Employers must make some contribution toward the payment of group insurance premiums. If employees are expected to pay any part of the cost, at least 75 percent of those eligible to participate must elect to do so. If the employer pays the entire cost of the policy, it must insure all employees except those deemed uninsurable by the insurance carrier.
Beneficiaries. Individual group members choose their beneficiaries. The employer may not be named as a beneficiary.
Dependents. Employees have the right to elect coverage to insure their spouses, domestic partners, and dependent children. The term "domestic partner" has the meaning stated in the policy. The policy may provide that the term “dependent children” includes children under 18 years of age and children 18 years of age or older who attend an educational institution and rely on the employee for financial support. Coverage of a spouse, domestic partner, or child may not exceed the amount of insurance on the employee.
Conversion. Employees, as well as their spouses or domestic partners and dependent children, are guaranteed the right to convert group coverage to an individual policy in the event that the group member's employment is terminated or the member ceases for any ...
