Massachusetts Life Insurance: What you need to know

Employers have no obligation under Massachusetts law to offer life insurance to their employees. However, if group life insurance is among the benefits offered to workers, certain minimum requirements must be satisfied (MA Gen. Laws Ch. 175 Sec. 133et seq.).

Group characteristics. There is no minimum number of employees who must be in the group to be insured. If the employer pays all or part of the premium, the group must include all employees of the employer, or all of any class or classes of employees determined by conditions pertaining to their employment, or by duration of service. A duration of employment requirement for eligibility may be no longer than 1 year. Employees eligible for coverage may include retirees and partners or individual proprietors if an employer is a partnership or an individual proprietor and the partners or proprietors are actively engaged in and devote a substantial part of their time to the conduct of the business of the proprietor or partnership. Eligible employees may also include the officers, managers, and employees of subsidiary or affiliated corporations and the individual proprietors, partners, and employees of affiliated individuals and firms, if the business of the employer and of such subsidiary or affiliated corporations, firms, or individuals is under common control, through stock ownership, contract, or otherwise .
Beneficiary. The employee may name anyone except the employer as beneficiary.
Employer/employee contributions. Employers are not required to make a contribution toward the cost of group insurance.
Conversion. Employees are guaranteed the right to convert group coverage to an individual policy if the group member's employment is ...
