Rhode Island Child Labor: What you need to know

In Rhode Island, people under the age of 18 are considered minors for purposes of employment, and Rhode Island child labor law governs their work life, distinguishing among minors according to age, type of occupation, and hours of work. The law applies to employers with five or more employees and to any employer that hires a minor under the age of 16. It is the employer's responsibility under these laws to ensure that its employees are old enough to work legally at their assigned duties and during their assigned hours. Young employees performing household service or farm work are exempt from the state's child labor laws (RI Stat. Sec. 28-3-1et seq.).
