South Dakota Deductions From Pay: What you need to know

Medical examinations and records. An employee may not be required to pay the cost of a preemployment medical examination, and an employer may not deduct the cost of any such examination from wages. In addition, an employee may not be required to pay the cost to obtain any records required by the employer as a condition of employment (SD Cod. Laws Sec. 60-11-2).

Voting. Employers may not deduct wages from employees who are absent from work for the purpose of voting in any election within the state (SD Cod. Laws Sec. 12-3-5).
Public employers may make deductions authorized in writing by the employee (SD Cod. Laws Sec. 3-10-8).
