Kansas Paychecks: What you need to know

'Wages' defined. “Wages” include all amounts due for labor or service performed by an employee. Wages may be fixed or determined by time, job, piecework, commission, or any other method (KS Stat. Sec. 44-313).

An employer must pay its employees their wages at least once a month on regular paydays designated in advance. Payment must be made within 15 days of the end of the pay period (KS Stat. Sec. 44-314).
Employers in Kansas have the option of paying wages by:
• Lawful money.
• Check or draft negotiable in the community where the employment is located.
• Electronic fund transfer or deposit to an automated clearinghouse member financial institution account designated by the employee. Employers that elect to pay wages by direct deposit must provide an alternative method for those employees who do not designate a financial institution.
• Payroll card. Employers that elect the payroll card option must allow employees at least one free withdrawal per pay period. A "payroll card" is a card issued to an employee, and the employee's net wages are loaded on regular paydays from a payroll card account and made accessible to the employee. Employers must conduct educational forums or distribute information about direct deposit or payroll card programs at least 30 days before implementing a payroll card program (KS Stat. Sec. 44-314).
An employer may make certain deductions from employees' wages (KS Stat. Sec. 44-319, KS Rules and Reg. Sec. 49-20-1).
