Michigan Paychecks: What you need to know

“Wages” means all earnings of an employee whether determined on the basis of time, task, piece, commission, or other method of calculation for labor or services. Wages do not include fringe benefits due an employee pursuant to a written contract or written policy for holiday, time off for sickness or injury, time off for personal reasons or vacation, bonuses, authorized expenses incurred during the course of employment, and contributions made on behalf of an employee (MI Stat. Sec. 408.471).

Employers are free to establish weekly, biweekly, or monthly paydays, but must adhere to the schedule once it has been established. For weekly or biweekly paydays, wages must be paid on or before the 14th day following the work period in which they were earned. For monthly paydays, wages must be paid on or before the first day of the calendar month following the month in which they were earned (MI Stat. Sec. 408.472).
Employers without regular paydays must pay wages earned during the first 15 days of the month on or before the first day of the following month; wages earned during the last 15 days of the month must be paid on or before the 15th day of the following month.
Hand harvesters. Employees who work in any aspect of hand harvesting must be paid all wages earned in a week by the second day of the following workweek, but may agree in writing to a different schedule.
Wages may be paid in cash, or by checks or drafts that can be cashed, without charge, at a bank or elsewhere (MI Stat. Sec. 408.476).
Direct deposit. Employers may pay wages by direct deposit or electronic transfer into an employee's own bank or financial institution, provided the employee has given written ...
