Michigan Homeworkers/ Telecommuting: What you need to know

Each department in the administrative branch is to offer telecommuting options to eligible employees as part of an initiative to help state workers save on commuting costs. Information on this program is available on the State Employer Intranet. Guidelines for state workers who telecommute are available at http://www.michigan.gov. An application to telecommute is available from department directors or supervisors, or online at http://www.michigan.gov.

Private employers are encouraged by the Michigan Department of Transportation to allow employees to telecommute in order to help with highway congestion management. The Department of Community Health's Office of Public Health Preparedness also encourages employers to incorporate telecommuting through the access of remote networks and use of portable computers in their emergency and pandemic disease plans.
The state follows the federal Fair Labor Standards Act,also known as the federal Wage and Hour Law, in governing homeworkers.
