South Carolina Homeworkers/ Telecommuting: What you need to know

The state encourages telecommuting on a full- or part-time basis for employees whose normal duties and responsibilities allow them to work through the use of telecommunications equipment (SC Code 8-11-15(B)). Agency heads and agency telecommuting coordinators identify the job classes and positions that are considered appropriate for telecommuting.
Employees must follow state and federal laws, agency policies and procedures, and safety and security measures when telecommuting from home or an alternate worksite. The telecommuting policy contains provisions for maintaining the security of data and computers and access to computer files.
The telecommuting policy is available on the OHR website at http://www.jobs.sc.gov.
Telecommuting resources center. The OHR has a telecommuting resource center for state employees and employers at http://www.jobs.sc.gov. Telecommuters fill out an application that must be approved by their supervisor and department head. If approved to telecommute, an employee must sign a Telecommuting Agreement stating that he or she will adhere to the rules of the telecommuting policy. There is also a telecommuting safety checklist on the website.
The South Carolina Department of Transportation encourages employers to allow telecommuting as one means of alleviating traffic volume during commuting hours, especially in the I-95 and I-526 corridors.
