Comparison: State vs. Federal

Rules. To date, the federal government's involvement in renewable energy programs has been limited to voluntary programs and providing financial incentives for renewable energy generation. Louisiana has followed the lead of the federal government and is encouraging the use of renewable energy resources but has not established legislation requiring it.

Administration and enforcement. The DNR encourages and assists in the voluntary development of renewable energy resources. The PSC administers the renewable energy pilot program.

Renewable Energy Development Act

The Louisiana Renewable Energy Development Act encourages the production of electrical energy using renewable sources by allowing for net-metering.

Renewable Energy Pilot Program

In addition, the PSC established a renewable energy pilot program in 2010 to determine if a renewable energy portfolio standard is suitable for the state.

Louisiana Gasohol Act

LRS 30:1301 to 30:1304

The Louisiana Gasohol Act promotes the use of renewable energy by encouraging participation of the private sector in the development of a production system for alcohol fuels.
