Comparison: State vs. Federal

Rules. Iowa follows the federal rules for hazardous chemical community right-to-know reporting, and requires that employers must provide the public with access to MSDSs on request.

Iowa is a "state plan" state; that is, it has a federally approved occupational safety and health regulatory program. The Iowa Occupational Safety and Health Act governs occupational safety and health, including MSDS requirements, in both the public and private sector workplaces. Iowa has adopted the federal MSDS requirements by reference. See the national section MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET for more information.

Administration and enforcement. IWD administers the chemical reporting requirements under community right-to-know and enforces the occupational safety and health in both the public and private sector workplaces.
