Comparison: State vs. Federal
• Rules. EPA has granted primacy to DEP to administer the drinking water program requirements under the federal Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). See the national section DRINKING WATER for more information about the SDWA requirements.
DEP generally follows the federal rule requirements for public water suppliers and also has some additional requirements under the Florida Safe Drinking Water Act. For instance, in addition to requiring all of the federal maximum contaminant levels (MCL) for pollutants, the state also specifies an MCL for nickel of 0.1 milligrams per liter (mg/L) and an MCL of 160 mg/L for sodium.
