Rules. ADEM's groundwater programs include regulations for the siting, construction, and operation of drinking water wells, and the underground injection control program, which regulates injection of treated wastewater into wells following federal law and regulations. See the national section GROUNDWATER for federal rules and a groundwater inspection checklist.

Underground injection wells. Alabama's underground injection control program prohibits the injection of pollutants into any underground area unless such injection is authorized by a permit. Construction of injection wells, surface facilities, and monitoring wells also requires a permit. See the state section UNDERGROUND INJECTION WELLS for more information.
