Michigan Counseling Services/ EAPs: What you need to know

Human resources generalists, as well as employee assistance program (EAP) counselors, managers, and directors, can keep abreast of the issues related to EAPs by joining a chapter of the EAPA. These groups also provide guidance to employers that have not yet set up EAPs in their own companies.

In Michigan, the state EAP is known as the Employee Service Program (ESP). ESP provides services to classified state employees who are experiencing work-related problems or personal concerns that are affecting their work. Counselors provide expert assistance in the identification and resolution of work and personal issues. The Michigan ESP offers individual consultations, work unit consultations, and traumatic incident debriefing. The Michigan ESP can be contacted in Lansing at 800-521-1377 or 517-373-7630 and in Detroit at 800-872-5563 or 313-456-4020. More information is available at www.michigan.gov/esp.
ESP also offers an orientation that describes the services available to state employees experiencing job-related or personal problems and how to access those services.
