Mississippi Counseling Services/ EAPs: What you need to know

Human resources generalists, as well as employee assistance program (EAP) counselors, managers, and directors, can keep abreast of the issues related to EAPs by joining a chapter of the EAPA. These groups also provide guidance to employers that have not yet set up EAPs in their own companies. Employers that drug test employees will receive a five percent reduction on workers' compensation premiums, provided that they participate in the Drug-Free Workplace Workers' Compensation Premium Act. Among other things, this law requires employers to provide information to employees regarding their employee assistance options, as well as provide employee education and supervisor training on drug and alcohol abuse (this is generally part of an EAP). The employer must post information regarding the EAP or, if the employer does not have an EAP, an outside resource available to help employees with substance abuse problems (MS Code Sec. 71-3-201 through Sec. 71-3-225).
