North Carolina Minimum Wage: What you need to know

The following are not covered by the state's minimum wage law (NC Gen. Stat. Sec. 95-25.14):
• Outside sales representatives
• Employees of a boys' or girls' summer camp, or a seasonal religious or nonprofit educational conference center
• Rideshare drivers
• Farmworkers
• Bona fide volunteer firefighter or rescue and emergency medical services personnel in an incorporated, nonprofit volunteer or community fire department or an incorporated, nonprofit rescue squad
• Domestic help and babysitters
• Pages in the state assembly or governor's office
• Volunteers
• People employed at youth summer camps and nonprofit seasonal camps and retreats
• Inmates of prisons and mental institutions
• Performing artists
• Seafood workers
• Members of the employer's immediate family
The state also provides exemptions for certain white-collar personnel that are identical to the federal exemptions.
Persons whose earning capacity is impaired by physical or mental deficiency or injury may qualify for employment at wages below the minimum, but only with the authorization of the state Department of Labor (NC Gen. Stat. Sec. 95-25.3).
People who have been certified as economically disadvantaged may be hired at 85 percent of the minimum for up to 52 weeks (NC Gen. Stat. Sec. 95-25.3).
Employees who are employed by seasonal businesses such as amusement parks, recreation establishments, or food service establishments may be paid 85 percent of the minimum wage rate (NC ...
