Currently, there is no state law banning the use of handheld cell phones. However, several localities have passed ordinances restricting use of handheld cell phones while driving.
Effective March 8, 2012, all drivers are prohibited from using an interactive wireless communication device to write, send, or read written text-based messages or to view the Internet (PA Stat. Tit. 75 Sec. 3316).
Entering a number or name into a cell phone for voice communication is not prohibited under this law.
Note: This law supersedes and preempts any local ordinances restricting the use of interactive wireless devices by drivers in the state.
