Maine Fire Drills: What you need to know

Maine has no specific law or regulation requiring all employers to conduct fire drills.

However, the federal Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSH Act), which governs the Maine occupational safety and health system, requires that companies with 10 or more employees have written fire prevention and emergency exit plans for each workplace. Employers with fewer than 10 employees may communicate the plans orally. To ensure that the exit plan will work in an actual emergency, it is advisable to rehearse regularly with annual or semiannual drills.

Local fire safety codes may contain additional requirements.
State buildings. The building coordinator for each state facility must coordinate and hold regular fire drills at least quarterly and develop building evacuation plans and staff preparedness training.
Schools. Public and private schools are required to hold and record fire drills as follows during the school year: elementary, 10 drills; grades 5 through 8, 8 drills; and grades 9 through 12, 6 drills. Drills must be held in each of the first 2 months of the school year.
Childcare/Daycare facilities. Licensed facilities must hold and keep records of monthly fire drills. The state has a brochure to help childcare business owners with emergency planning at http://maingov.
Residential healthcare facilities. Licensed facilities must hold and keep records of monthly fire drills.
