New Hampshire Fire Drills: What you need to know

New Hampshire has no specific law or regulation requiring employers to conduct fire drills. However, local fire safety codes may contain additional requirements.

The Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSH Act) does require companies with 10 or more employees to have written fire prevention and emergency exit plans for each workplace. Employers with fewer than 10 employees may communicate the plans orally. To ensure that the exit plan will work in an actual emergency, it is advisable to rehearse regularly with annual or semiannual drills.

State workers. Under Article XXII, Section 22.4, of the state employees' collective bargaining agreement with the state Department of Administrative Services, each state employer must devise, publish, and make conspicuous an evacuation plan for each department's facility.
Schools. Under the state fire code for educational occupancies, enforced by the Division of Fire Safety, emergency egress and relocation drills are to be held monthly in educational facilities, with the first drill held within the first 30 days of the school year. Drills in winter months may be deferred if weather is inclement. Two of the drills can be used to practice response to hazards other than fires (bomb threats, earthquakes, etc.). Office and kitchen staff must participate in the drills.
Healthcare facilities. Any healthcare facility licensed in the state of New Hampshire must be in compliance with state fire codes and the National Fire Protection Association's 101 Life Safety Code®, Chapter 13, which mandates quarterly fire/emergency drills or simulated drills using actual ...
