District of Columbia Apprenticeship Training: What you need to know

An apprenticeship program combines classroom instruction or education with on-the-job training under the close supervision of a skilled and experienced journeyworker in a craft, trade, or profession. Apprenticeship programs are sponsored by employers, labor groups, and employer associations.

The District's Office of Apprenticeship Information and Training (OAIT) registers apprentices and apprenticeship programs.
The District of Columbia's voluntary apprenticeship program is governed by the D.C. mayor and the D.C. Apprenticeship Council (DC Code Sec. 32-1401 et seq.).
An apprenticeable occupation:
• Is a skilled trade that is normally learned through on-the-job training
• Is commonly recognized throughout an industry
• Involves mechanical or technical skills and knowledge and related instruction to supplement the on-the-job training
Local committees. In each locality where apprentices are employed, local joint committees are established to serve the needs of the various apprenticeable occupations. These local committees administer training programs, review and evaluate the progress of each apprentice, and check qualifications of training and supervisory personnel, safe equipment, and facilities.
Under District of Columbia law, an apprentice is a person who is at least 16 years of age and who has entered into a written apprenticeship agreement with a program sponsor. The apprenticeship agreement must provide for at least 2,000 hours of employment, and for participation in an approved program that includes on-the-job training and education in related subjects (DC Code 32-1407).
