Rhode Island Apprenticeship Training: What you need to know

An apprenticeship is an on-the-job training program that combines classroom instruction or education with work performance under the close supervision of a skilled and experienced journeyworker in a craft, trade, or profession. Rhode Island's Department of Labor and Training approves apprenticeship programs, issues certificates of completion, receives and disburses federal funds, and generally works to assist employers.

Apprenticeship program sponsors must pay a $120 fee annually to the state apprenticeship council for approval and registration; the apprentice must pay $24 annually for approval and registration (RI Gen. Laws Sec. 28-45-9.1 and Sec. 28-45-13.1).
An apprenticeable occupation is a skilled trade that:
• Is normally learned in a practical way through a structured on-the-job training program
• Is commonly recognized throughout an industry
• Involves the progressive attainment of manual, mechanical, or technical skills, and knowledge, which is in accordance with the industry standard for the occupation, that requires the completion of at least a minimum of 2,000 hours of on-the-job learning
Each apprenticeship is built around a written agreement between sponsor and apprentice, containing the rules, conditions, and training standards of the work relationship. Agreements must be registered with the Department of Labor and Training as soon as practicable but no later than 90 days after the apprenticeship begins.
Agreements must contain:
• The names, signatures, and addresses of the parties (and of a parent if the apprentice is a minor) and the apprentice's birth date
• The names and addresses of the program sponsor and the registration agency
