Montana Cranes and Derricks (Construction): What you need to know

Private sector employers in Montana are regulated under the federal occupational safety rules for cranes and derricks in construction. The state does not have a federally approved occupational safety and health regulatory program for private sector employers; however, the state has adopted its own requirements for the licensing of hoisting equipment operators in construction work.

Public sector (local and state government offices and operations) employers in Montana are subject to state workplace safety and health requirements.

The Montana Department of Labor and Industry, Business Standards Division, administers the crane operator licensing requirements in the state.

CRANE OPERATOR LICENSING
MT Code Ann. 50-76-103 and Admin. Rules of MT 24.135.516

Operators of crane hoisting equipment must obtain a crane hoisting operator’s license before operating a crane.
