Nevada Emergency Preparedness: What you need to know

The Nevada Department of Public Safety (DPS) Division of Emergency Management helps businesses develop, plan, implement, and maintain programs to prepare for emergencies such as earthquakes, fires, floods, severe storms, hazardous material releases, and terrorism and mitigate the results of disasters. The Division of Emergency Management's "Plan Ahead Nevada" program has specific steps business can take to plan for protecting employees and facilities during disasters and for business continuity available at http://dps.nv.gov/PAN/ planaheadflip/Default.html.


State officials may initiate the Emergency Alert System (EAS) to give emergency information and instructions via local radio and TV stations. Also, local sheriffs will patrol areas and use their vehicles' public address systems to give area-specific information. A list of EAS stations is available on the Plan Ahead Nevada website.

Residents of southern Nevada and Clark County can sign up to receive emergency alerts via their cell phones or by e-mail by going to https://sonevada.onthealert.com.

Earthquake Drills

DPS, the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology, the Nevada Earthquake Safety Council, the University of Nevada, and the Earthquake Country Alliance hold a yearly earthquake drill, called the Great Nevada Shake Out, in October. For more information, go to http://www.shakeout.org/nevada.

Emergency Drills

State law requires fire drills in state buildings and in schools. However, DPS suggests that employers hold evacuation and shelter-in-place drills at their facilities as part of their emergency plans.
