Ohio MSDS : What you need to know

· Rules. Ohio follows the federal hazardous substance community right-to-know reporting requirements, including those for material safety data sheets (MSDSs), including an allowance for facilities to submit MSDSs in lieu of a chemical list.

Ohio is not a "state plan" state; that is, it does not have its own federally-approved workplace safety and health regulatory program. Therefore, the federal OSH Act governs occupational safety and health, including MSDS requirements, in the private sector workplace. PERRP governs MSDS requirements, which are the same as federal requirements, in public sector (state and local government offices and facilities) workplaces. · Administration and enforcement. OEPA administers and enforces state community right-to-know requirements. OSHA administers and enforces MSDS requirements in the private sector workplace. BWC administers and enforces public sector occupational safety and health requirements, including MSDSs.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE LOCK BOX

MSDSs for extremely hazardous substances must be placed in the emergency response lock box unit where such boxes are required. If there are too many MSDSs to fit in the box, the facility must designate an alternate location in agreement with the jurisdictional fire department where the MSDS information can be easily accessed or downloaded by the emergency responders either in hard copy or to a computer terminal.
