25+ Years Later, BLR Co-Owner Starts New Career

When John Brady joined brother Bob in 1981 he became the third employee at the fledgling B2B publisher, Business & Legal Reports, Inc. (formerly named the Bureau of Law & Business, Inc.). Even though their office was on the wrong side of the tracks in downtown Stamford, CT, the two brothers were proud of their new space. With sales increasing, Bob (President) had just moved the office out of his home. The company had one product and one book, “The Personnel Managers Legal Reporter”, a monthly newsletter priced at $48 per year. “Law for Personnel Managers”, a book just written by Bob, was given to new subscribers as a free premium.

Now 25 years later John (Exec. VP) has decided it is time for another adventure. Effective August 1 and with mutual agreement with Bob, he has reduced his duties to a small number of projects, mostly involving paid search engine advertising and landing page development. As of January 1 2007 he will be totally on his own and no longer an employee of BLR. John will, however, continue to be an owner of the business.

John commented on the changes that have taken place: “BLR (and the publishing world!) have changed tremendously since the early days when Bob and I were the chiefs as well as the braves. Direct mail was the marketing vehicle of choice, and response rates were unbelievable!” Now with a talented management team in place, including COO Brian Gurnham and 3rd brother Mike as CFO, the 200+ employee company has professional management depth. Brady continued, “I realized this year that with our successful transition from print publisher to online publisher, a chapter had ended. This had become an ideal time to strike out on my own, as our talented new staff is extremely capable of moving us to the next level.” Bob and John hashed out an agreement which allows John to seek a new challenge while Bob remains at the helm of the company he founded in 1977.
