OSHA had a busy time of it in Fiscal Year 2004, exceeding its goal and recording a total of 39,167 workplace inspections. What can trigger an inspection? According to OSHA, frequent inspection triggers include repeatedly ignoring health and safety obligations, having high injury and illness rates, and having employees who complain about workplace safety.
One of the best ways to stay smiling when an OSHA Compliance Officer arrives at your door is to have a written safety plan in place. The plan should detail exact procedures to be followed in all critical safety areas, such as confined spaces, hazardous materials, and responding to emergencies. Firms that go to the trouble of having a written plan in place are more likely to be perceived as safe by OSHA, and thus avoid hefty and embarrassing OSHA fines.
To make it easy for any organization to have a carefully developed, custom-written safety plan in place, Business and Legal Reports Inc. is pleased to announce the launch of its new Easy Workplace Safety Program. This new safety handbook and CD ROM program provides an easy to follow template on every key OSHA safety area. Managers can use the system to easily develop a custom program by just filling in the blanks and modifying the template to fit their needs. The plan contains a complete model program, along with custom procedures for 20 of OSHA's most challenging procedure areas, including Emergency Planning and Lockout/Tagout. Forms and state-specific requirements are also included.
"Most employers want to provide a safe environment for their workers and avoid OSHA problems", said BLR President and founder Bob Brady. "We are extremely pleased to provide a resource that helps them easily create a safety plan and improve workplace safety".
OSHA handed out 86,708 citations during fiscal year 2004, an increase of 3.8 percent.
