Illinois Holidays: What you need to know

Illinois observes the following as legal holidays:

February 12 Lincoln's Birthday
Third Monday in February Presidents Day

Friday before Easter Good Friday
Last Monday in May Memorial Day
July 4 Independence Day
First Monday in September Labor Day
Second Monday in October Columbus Day

For banks, when a legal holiday falls on a Sunday, it is observed on the following Monday (205 ILCS 630/17).
State employees. For state employees, when a legal holiday falls on a Sunday, it is observed on the following Monday; and when it falls on a Saturday, it is observed on the preceding Friday (80 IL Admin. Code 303.200).
With the exceptions of Pulaski's Birthday and Good Friday, state offices are closed, and employees of the government of Illinois are entitled to the days noted as paid days off.
Private employers. Private employers are not required by state law to provide any holidays as paid (or unpaid) days off. However, the majority of Illinois employers do grant at least seven paid holidays.
No Illinois law requires that employers:
• Pay premium pay to employees who work on holidays.
• Pay employees for unworked hours on holidays.
• Count unworked hours on holidays as “hours worked” when computing overtime.
However, many Illinois employers provide one or more of these benefits.
