Iowa Holidays: What you need to know

Iowa observes the following as official holidays:

January 1 New Year's Day
3rd Monday of January Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday
Last Monday of May Memorial Day
July 4 Independence Day
1st Monday in September Labor Day
November 11 Veterans Day
4th Thursday in November Thanksgiving Day
Friday following Thanksgiving Day Friday after Thanksgiving Day
December 25 Christmas
State employers. Iowa state offices are closed and state employees are entitled to the days noted above as paid holidays (IA Code Sec. 1C.2). If a holiday falls on a Saturday, it is observed on the previous Friday. If a holiday falls on a Sunday, it is observed on the following Monday.
Private employers. Private employers are not obligated by state law to provide any holidays as paid (or unpaid) days off. However, the majority of Iowa employers do observe at least 6 paid holidays.
When a holiday falls on a Sunday, it is observed on the following day; when it falls on a Saturday, it is observed on the preceding Friday.
Employers must allow employees who are veterans to take holiday time off on Veterans Day, unless providing the time off would impact public health or safety or would cause the employer significant economic or operational disruption. The employer is not required to pay employees for this day off.
Notice. Employees must give employers 1 month's written notice of their intent to take off on Veterans Day, and they must provide the employer with a federal certificate of release or discharge from active duty or a similar document showing eligibility as a veteran.
