Kentucky Holidays: What you need to know

Kentucky observes the following as official holidays:

January 19 Robert E. Lee Day
January 30 Franklin D. Roosevelt Day
February 12 Lincoln's Birthday
Third Monday in February Washington's Birthday
Last Monday in May Memorial Day
June 3 Confederate Memorial Day and Jefferson Davis Day
July 4 Independence Day
First Monday in September Labor Day
Second Monday in October Columbus Day
November 11 Veterans Day
Fourth Thursday in November Thanksgiving Day
December 25 Christmas Day
When a holiday falls on a Sunday, it is observed on the following Monday. When it falls on a Saturday, it is observed on the preceding Friday (KY Rev. Stat. Sec. 2.110).
State employers. State offices are closed and state employees are entitled to the holidays noted (with the exception of Robert E. Lee Day and Confederate Memorial/Jefferson Davis Day) as paid days off. In addition, while not official legal holidays, state employees also receive paid time off for the day after Thanksgiving, the afternoon of Good Friday, Presidential Election Day, and, depending on the day of the week on which these holidays fall, the day before or the day after both Christmas and New Year's Day (KY Rev. Stat. Sec. 2.190, Sec. 18A.190).
Private employers. No one in the private or public sector may be compelled to work on Labor Day. However, no law requires that private-sector employees be paid for the day. Otherwise, private employers are not required by state law to provide any holidays as paid (or unpaid) days off. However, the majority of Kentucky employers do grant at least six paid holidays.
