Mississippi state offices are closed and state employees are entitled to the days noted above as paid holidays.
If a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, it may be observed by state agencies the following Monday (MS Code Sec. 25-1-97).
County courthouses close on the preceding Friday to observe holidays that fall on a Saturday and the following Monday if a holiday falls on a Sunday (MS Code Sec. 25-1-99).
Private employers are not obligated by state law to provide any holidays as paid or unpaid time off. However, many Mississippi employers observe some of the following practices:
• Premium pay to employees who work on holidays
• Counting unworked hours on holidays as "hours worked" when computing overtime
• Paying employees for unworked hours on holidays
