Tennessee Holidays: What you need to know

Tennessee observes the following as official holidays:

Third Monday in February Washington Day
Friday before Easter Good Friday
Last Monday in May Memorial or Decoration Day
July 4 Independence Day
First Monday in September Labor Day
Second Monday in October Columbus Day
November 11 VeteransDay
Fourth Thursday in November Thanksgiving Day
December 25 Christmas Day
If a legal holiday falls on a Sunday, it is observed on the following Monday. If a legal holiday falls on a Saturday, it is observed on the preceding Friday (TN Code Ann. Sec. 15-1-101). All election days for county, state, or national elections are legal holidays. The president of the United States or the governor may designate additional legal holidays.
State employees. Tennessee government offices are closed and state employees are entitled to the days noted as paid days off (TN Code Ann. Sec. 4-4-105). In addition, there is a special provision that allows up to 3 hours' time off for employees on election days. The law is designed to allow workers enough time to vote without a penalty or a reduction in pay. The provision doesn't apply to employees whose work hours begin at least 3 hours after the polls open, or to those whose work hours end at least 3 hours before the polls close (TN Code Ann. Sec. 2-1-106).
Private employers. Private employers are not required by state law to provide any holidays as paid (or unpaid) days off. If the workforce is unionized, paid holidays are determined by the union contract; otherwise, holiday time is up to the individual employer
