Rhode Island Life Insurance: What you need to know

Employers have no obligation under Rhode Island law to offer life insurance to their employees. If group term life insurance is provided, certain minimum standards must be met (R.I. Gen. Laws Sec. 27-4.8-1 et seq.).

Group characteristics. The group eligible to be insured must consist of all employees or all members of a class of employees.
Beneficiary. The employee may name anyone except the employer as beneficiary.
Employer/employee contributions. Premiums may be paid entirely by the employer, entirely by the employee, or jointly by the employer and the employee. A policy on which no part of the premium is paid by the insured employees must insure all eligible employees, except those who reject the coverage in writing.
Family coverage. Coverage may be extended to the employee's spouse and dependent children. Coverage of a spouse or dependent child may not exceed the amount of insurance on the employee.
Employees must be allowed to pay the employer's share of group life insurance premiums required by a collective bargaining agreement during a work stoppage. The premium may be increased by 6 percent to cover additional administrative expenses (RI Gen. Laws Sec. 27-4-22.1).
