Pennsylvania Minimum Wage: What you need to know

Philadelphia. A minimum wage of $12.00 must be paid to city contractors and subcontractors effective January 1, 2015.

Several occupations and industries are exempt from the minimum wage provisions of the Pennsylvania law, including (PA Stat. Tit. 43 Sec. 333.102et seq.):
• Farm laborers
• Domestic servants in private homes
• Newspaper carriers
• Employees of local newspapers with a circulation of less than 4,000
• Volunteers of charitable, religious, or nonprofit organizations
• Employees under 18 (under 24, if enrolled in school) working in seasonal camps for disabled children
• Employees of most seasonal amusement parks and summer camps
• Golf caddies
• Switchboard operators working for small, independently owned telephone companies
• Elected officials and their noncivil service staff members and advisors
• Administrative, executive, and professional employees
Training wage. Employers in Pennsylvania are not permitted to pay trainees a subminimum wage.
Workers with disabilities. Individuals whose earning capacity is reduced by a physical or mental impairment may be hired at a rate below the minimum wage, but only pursuant to a license issued by state labor authorities.
Students and learners. Meal and Lodging Credit
Employers may apply the reasonable cost of board and lodging as a credit against the minimum wage requirements. The employee must be notified of the credit and accept it as a condition of employment when hired. Reasonable cost is the actual cost to the employer for the food or housing.
