Local governments in Tennessee may not require employers to pay employees higher wages or prevailing wages than that required by state or federal law as a condition of doing business in that locality. There is an exception for prevailing wages if a contract with the federal government will be denied funding if a higher wage is required and not paid.
Tennessee’s Wage Regulations Act now requires that employees bring their wage complaints to the state Department of Labor (DOL), rather than initiating a civil court proceeding. Initiating a complaint in a civil court proceeding was previously allowed.
