Ohio Minimum Wage: What you need to know

There are a number of exemptions to the Ohio minimum wage law:
• Individuals employed by the U.S. government
• Certain agricultural workers as detailed in OH Stat. Sec. 4111.01 et seq.
• Babysitters
• Live-in companions to a sick, convalescing, or elderly person, and whose main duties do not include housekeeping
• Newspaper deliverers
• Outside salespeople or those in a bona fide executive, administrative, or professional capacity as such terms are defined by the federal Fair Labor Standards Act
• Hospital volunteers
• Members of police or fire protection agencies
• Students employed part-time in the public sector
• Individuals employed by camps for children under the age of 18 and operated by a nonprofit organization
• Individuals employed directly by the house of representatives or the senate
• Employees who are family members of a solely family owned and operated business
People whose earning capacity is impaired by age or physical or mental disability may be paid a wage below the statutory minimum, but the employer must obtain a license from the state authorizing such employment.
Apprentices may be paid no less than 85 percent of the minimum wage, provided the employer obtains the proper license. The apprenticeship wage licenses are good for only 90 days (OH Stat. Sec. 4111.07).
The reasonable cost of meals and lodging an employer provides to an employee can be used to partially satisfy minimum wage requirements.
