An employee must have worked or been on paid leave, other than educational leave, for 100 or more regular hours in a month to accrue sick leave. Employees can periodically earn extra sick days according to length of service.
Employees may use sick leave for their own illness or injury, for medical appointments, and if their presence at work would jeopardize the health of themselves or others because of a contagious disease or dangerous behavior.
In addition, employees are allowed to use sick leave to care for or transport a member of their immediate families in need of medical attention for a reasonable period of time.
The employee may be required to provide a doctor's statement certifying the employee's need to care for a family member.
Employees may also use up to three days of sick leave for the death of a spouse, parent, grandparent, child, brother or sister, or the spouse of any of them, and possibly other relatives of close association. At the termination of sick leave with pay, the employee must be returned to his or her former position.
