Comparison: State vs. Federal

Rules. To date, the federal government's involvement in renewable energy programs has been limited to voluntary programs and providing financial incentives for renewable energy generation. Alabama has followed the lead of the federal government and has not implemented any renewable energy programs at the state level. However, state legislation encourages the use of renewable energy resources, alternative energy sources, and more efficient uses of energy sources and other appropriate technology.

Alabama permits the process of hydraulic fracturing in the state, and requires approval by the Alabama State Oil and Gas Board (Board). See the national section ENERGY for more information on hydraulic fracturing.

Administration and enforcement. The Board oversees and approves hydraulic fracturing operations in the state.
