Comparison: State vs. Federal
• Rules. Indiana generally follows the federal rules for oil spill response. For additional federal oil spill requirements, see the national section OIL SPILLS.
Indiana has adopted its own rules in addition to the federal rules and requires anyone responsible for a discharge of oil to immediately report the spill to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management's (IDEM) Office of Land Quality's Emergency Response Section.
• Administration and enforcement. The IERC is responsible for the administration and enforcement of the state's oil spill planning rules. IDEM's Emergency Response Section is responsible for responding to oil spills in Indiana.
