Comparison: State vs. Federal

Rules. Montana has established a spill reporting policy under the state Water Quality Act. Montana requires that all releases or spills of hazardous or deleterious substances or other wastes, regardless of size, be properly and quickly managed, contained, and removed. See the state sections ABOVEGROUND STORAGE TANKS and UNDERGROUND STORAGE TANKS for more information.

In the event of a reportable release, facility personnel should call NRC, as well as DES or DEQ. See the state section RELEASE NOTIFICATION for a review of general and federal leak detection requirements.
