Comparison: State vs. Federal

Rules. Indiana has adopted by reference the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Hazardous Waste Generator Improvements Rule, effective in Indiana as of December 26, 2019. The federal accumulation time rules allow generators to accumulate hazardous waste on-site without a permit for specific periods of time. See the national section ACCUMULATION TIME to review the specific time periods applicable to each type of generator. For generator on-site hazardous waste storage requirements, see the national section HAZARDOUS WASTE STORAGE.

Administration and enforcement. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management's (IDEM) Compliance and Response Branch administers and enforces the state's accumulation time requirements for hazardous waste.
