Rules. The federal containment building rules are in effect in Massachusetts.

Administration and enforcement. The regulations for permitted containment buildings are administered and enforced by the EPA because although the EPA has authorized the Massachusetts DEP to administer and enforce most of the state's hazardous waste management rules, Massachusetts has not yet incorporated the rules for permitted containment buildings into its hazardous waste management program. Massachusetts has, however, adopted by reference the federal rules for interim-status containment buildings and they are administered and enforced by the DEP.
