Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) Land Division Industrial Hazardous Waste Branch Compliance & Enforcement Section
See national section for basic information and federal regulations.
Comparison: State vs. Federal
• Rules. Alabama adopts the federal hazardous waste tank requirements, including the organic air emissions standards. The state also adopts by reference the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Hazardous Waste Generator Improvements Rule, effective in Alabama as of April 6, 2018, which includes standards for generators accumulating hazardous waste on-site in tanks. Owners and operators of hazardous waste treatment, storage, and disposal facilities (TSDFs) that use hazardous waste tanks must also comply with additional permit application requirements and pay several state permit and facility fees. The state's more stringent permit standards and fees are reviewed in the state section TSDF PERMITS.
• Administration and enforcement. The Alabama Department of Environmental Management's (ADEM) Industrial Hazardous Waste Branch administers and enforces the rules for hazardous waste tanks in Alabama.
