Comparison: State vs. Federal

Rules. Minnesota's hazardous waste tank rules include both the federal and more stringent state requirements. The state's rules focus on secondary containment variances and waste analysis records.

In addition, owners and operators of hazardous waste treatment, storage, and disposal facilities (TSDFs) that use tanks for hazardous waste storage or treatment must comply with additional permit application requirements and pay several state permit and facility fees. The state's more stringent permit standards and fees are reviewed in the state section TSDF PERMITS. See also the state section CLOSURE AND POST-CLOSURE PLANS to review the state's more stringent provisions for closing hazardous waste tanks.

Administration and enforcement. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) Compliance and Enforcement Section administers and enforces the hazardous waste tank rules in Minnesota.
