Governing Law and Regulations
Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) Land Management Administration Hazardous Waste Program
Comparison: State vs. Federal
• Rules. Maryland has adopted the federal rules for hazardous waste treatment facilities and has additional provisions for certain treatment facilities. Treatment facilities must also comply with more stringent permit standards than are required under the federal rules. Unlike the federal rules, Maryland does not allow generators to treat their hazardous waste on-site without a permit in compliance with the generator accumulation time rules.
• Administration and enforcement. The Maryland Department of the Environment's (MDE) Land Management Administration administers and enforces the hazardous waste treatment requirements in Maryland.
