Comparison: State vs. Federal

Rules. Arizona regulates medical waste under its solid waste management program. The state has requirements for generators, transporters, treatment facilities, and for the storage of biohazardous medical waste.

Hospital, medical, and infectious waste incinerators (HMIWIs) are regulated by the federal New Source Performance Standard (NSPS) for new HMIWIs. Existing HMIWIs must comply with Arizona regulations consistent with the federal emissions guidelines, or, in the absence of such regulations, comply with the federal plan requirements for existing HMIWIs. See the state section INCINERATION OF WASTES for more information on hospital, medical, and infectious waste incineration.
